Peramivir becomes the first FDA-approved intravenously (IV) administered antiviral for the treatment of influenza.

The approval was in response to a request from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The FDA reviewed scientific data on peramivir and concluded that it can now be used in certain hospitalized adult and pediatric patients with confirmed or suspected H1N1 influenza.

The emergency use of this drug is authorized only for patients who are clinically appropriate candidates for IV therapy and for whom oral or inhaled therapies are not feasible or have failed.
