Fring brings video calling to popular smartphones

If you own an iPhone 4, you’ve probably used the video chat service FaceTime.

The new calling feature works great, but can only be used from iPhone to iPhone over a Wi-Fi connection.

There is a new app called Fring (aka FaceTime without Wi-Fi) that will work over 3G/4G networks between multiple smartphones.

Fring runs in the background and notifies you when someone is trying to initiate a video chat session with you. The app works with Droid, Nokia Symbian S60, Evo and the iPhone.

Can Fring really work over 3G? In the video below, you can see the new app in action. Although the video shows some stuttering and blockiness, video calling over 3G is possible, and the performance could be acceptable for some users.

Nice interface. I think this will work great on networks like Verizon, but will be horrible on AT&T.

This is great news! I just got an Evo and will try this over 4G.
